Fur Coat Closure Guide: Hooks, Buttons, Zippers, and Belts

A fur coat’s closure may look like a small construction detail, but it affects warmth, movement, styling, and the entire front silhouette. Discreet hooks keep the fur visually uninterrupted, buttons add character, zippers create a clean modern line, and belts shape the waist. The right choice depends on how and where you plan to wear the coat.

Hook-and-eye closures: discreet and traditional

Fur hooks are designed to close the coat securely while remaining largely hidden beneath the pile. Because they do not interrupt the surface with visible hardware, they are a natural choice for luxurious fox, mink, raccoon, and chinchilla fur coats.

Hooks work especially well on straight, A-line, and full-length silhouettes where the fur itself should remain the focus. They also allow you to close only part of the coat when you want a more relaxed drape.

Buttons: decorative detail with a tailored mood

Buttons become part of the design rather than disappearing into it. Tonal buttons create a polished finish, while oversized or contrasting buttons can give a cropped fur jacket a bolder fashion identity.

Because plush fur can partially cover small buttons, their size and placement need to suit the density of the fur. Button closures often feel more structured and are a strong match for lapel collars, short jackets, and tailored silhouettes.

Zippers: clean, practical, and contemporary

A zipper closes the front in one continuous line, helping block drafts and giving the garment a streamlined appearance. Concealed zippers keep the hardware subtle, while exposed metal zippers create a sportier or more urban look.

Zippers are particularly practical for cropped jackets, hooded styles, travel, and frequent everyday wear. The surrounding fur should be finished carefully so that long hairs do not catch easily in the teeth.

Belts: adjustable shape and dramatic proportion

A belt changes both fit and attitude. It can define the waist on a wrap coat, create contrast against a voluminous silhouette, or be worn loosely for a relaxed effect. Self-fur belts feel soft and integrated, while leather belts add structure and visual contrast.

Belted coats are versatile because the front can be adjusted over different layers. However, the underlying coat still needs enough room through the chest and shoulders for comfortable movement.

Which closure should you choose?

  • Choose hidden hooks when you want an uninterrupted fur surface and classic luxury.
  • Choose buttons for visible detail and a more tailored personality.
  • Choose a zipper for dependable coverage and a modern everyday finish.
  • Choose a belt when adjustable waist definition is part of the design.

Fit, lining, and custom options

The closure should lie smoothly without pulling across the chest. We recommend choosing a size 4–8 cm larger than your actual chest measurement for a comfortable fit. We also offer larger sizes and fully custom sizing — contact us to place a custom order.

For a made-to-measure coat, the closure type can be coordinated with the fur, colour, collar, length, and intended use. Acrylic lining (default; custom lining available upon request). Explore our Fox Fur Collection and Mink Fur Collection for silhouette inspiration.
