How to Order a Custom Fur Coat: A Made-to-Measure Guide

A custom fur coat gives you control over the details that determine whether a garment simply fits or truly feels like your own. Fur type, colour, length, collar, closure, lining, and measurements all work together. The process becomes much easier when you make those decisions in the right order.

Start with how and where you will wear the coat

Before choosing colour or trim, define the coat’s main purpose. A cropped jacket for city wear needs different proportions from a full-length evening coat. A winter travel coat may benefit from a hood and secure zipper, while a formal design may call for a shawl collar and discreet fur hooks.

Consider your climate, typical layers, how often you sit or drive, and whether the coat is intended for daily wear, travel, events, or a statement wardrobe piece.

Choose the fur type and texture

Fox fur creates plush volume, visible movement, and dramatic colour effects. Mink offers a shorter, denser surface with a smooth sheen and precise silhouette. Raccoon fur has expressive guard hairs and a naturally textured appearance, while chinchilla is known for an exceptionally soft, dense surface.

The best choice depends on the visual effect you want, not only the fur name. Compare long-haired and short-haired textures, natural markings, colour possibilities, and how each fur behaves at your preferred length.

Define the silhouette and coat length

Decide whether you want a straight, oversized, fitted, A-line, wrap, or belted silhouette. Then choose the length according to your proportions and intended use: cropped, hip-length, thigh-length, above-the-knee, mid-calf, or full-length.

Length affects warmth, movement, weight, and formality. If you regularly drive or commute, a shorter design may be more practical. If you want maximum presence and coverage, a mid-calf or full-length coat may be the better foundation.

Select the collar and closure

The collar frames the face and changes the balance of the entire garment. A hood feels protective and relaxed, a stand collar creates clean vertical lines, a shawl collar feels soft and formal, and oversized lapels make a stronger fashion statement.

For the front closure, hidden hooks preserve an uninterrupted fur surface, buttons add visible detail, zippers offer reliable everyday coverage, and belts create adjustable waist definition.

Plan the colour and panel direction

Natural tones feel timeless and showcase the fur’s original markings. Dyed colours allow precise coordination with a wardrobe or a more directional fashion result. Two-tone and multi-colour designs can emphasise the collar, cuffs, hood, hem, or panel layout.

Horizontal panels increase visual rhythm and volume, while vertical panels create a longer line. Mixed-direction construction can be used to shape proportions or place colour strategically.

Provide accurate body measurements

Custom sizing should be based on measurements taken over light clothing, using a flexible tape held level without pulling tightly. Common measurements include chest, waist, hips, shoulder width, sleeve length, back length, and desired garment length.

Tell the maker what you normally wear under the coat. A garment intended for thick knitwear requires different ease from one worn over evening clothing. We recommend choosing a finished size 4–8 cm larger than your actual chest measurement for a comfortable fit.

Choose the lining and finishing details

The lining affects how the coat moves over clothing and how the interior feels in use. Acrylic lining (default; custom lining available upon request). Custom colour or material preferences can be coordinated with the exterior design.

Other decisions may include pocket placement, cuff shape, hardware finish, belt design, monogramming, and contrasting trim. Prioritise details that improve daily use rather than adding decoration without purpose.

Review the complete specification before production

Before confirming the order, review the fur type, colour, panel direction, silhouette, length, collar, closure, measurements, lining, pockets, and any reference images together. A clear final specification reduces ambiguity and keeps every design choice connected.
